Obituary of Letitia Catherine Andres

Letitia Catherine Andres passed away peacefully on October 20th 2013 in her home in Lewiston with her family by her side after a long illness. "Lettie" was born September 4th 1925 onboard the ship SS Letitia in the mid-Atlantic; her parents James and Jean Lennox, who were in the process of emigrating from Scotland to the US. Her family settled in Niagara Falls, NY where she attended local schools, graduating from Niagara Fall High School in 1944. She received her degree in education from Niagara University in 1948 and did post graduate training at NYU and Buffalo State College. She taught kindergarten and 1st grade in the Niagara Falls school system for 35 years.
Lettie married Jerry Andres in 1950 at Our Lady of Lebanon Church in Niagara Falls; they recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on October 7th.
Lettie was very active in the community and served on many boards, including the Friends of the Niagara University Theatre, The Shaw Festival Guild in Niagara on the Lake, The Tattler, and The Community Center of Niagara Falls. She was an active member of the Deveaux Mothers Club, The Niagara Council on the Arts, and The St Francis Guild at Mount St Mary's Hospital. She volunteered at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center and The Lampstand Soup Kitchen. In 1984 she received the 1st Annual Alberta Lounsbury Memorial Civic Award, presented by the Niagara Falls Human Rights Commission. Despite her numerous activities she still found time for her family.
She is survived by her husband Jerry; her son, Dr. Jerome Andres (Claudia) of Youngstown, NY; her daughter, Elizabeth Segar (Gregory) of DeWitt, NY; her grandchildren, James, Catherine, Patrick, Halley, Peter and Sarah; step-grandchildren, Ian, Adam, Nicholas, Erica, Jeffrey, Katie, and four great-children.
Visitation will be held from 4-8pm, Monday October 21st, at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Sts., Lewiston. A Memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, October 22, at 7:30 pm in the Alumni Chapel at Niagara University. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to Hart Interfaith, Lewiston, NY, or the Friends of the Niagara University Theatre.
