Obituary of Catherine D. Szostak

Catherine D. Szostak, age 93 formerly of Oxbow Lane in Lewiston, died Monday October 7, 2013 in Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence in Lewiston, after a lengthy illness. Catherine was born May 29, 1920 in Niagara Falls, NY, the daughter of the late Joseph and Teresa (Rufran) D'Amato. She was a 1938 graduate of Niagara Falls High School and lived most of her life on Haeberle Ave. in Niagara Falls before moving to Lewiston in 2006. Catherine had worked as a secretary in the law firm of her father, Joseph D'Amato. She then worked as an office clerk with the Niagara Falls Board of Education for 25 years. Catherine married John V. Szostak on October 18, 1952. John predeceased her on February 3, 2013. She was devoted to her catholic faith. She was a longtime member of St. Joseph's RC Church in Niagara Falls as well as a member of St. Joseph's Mother's Club. Since moving to Lewiston she has been a communicant of St. Peter's RC Church. Catherine was also a member of American Legion Portage Post # 1465 Ladies Auxiliary in Niagara Falls, NY. She loved to crochet and bake for her family and friends. She is survived by a daughter, JoAnn (Kevin) Broughton of Lewiston; a grandson, Patrick Broughton; a step grandson, John Broughton; a sister, Eleanor (late Edmund) Carroll of Florida; several nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Michael Szostak. JoAnn would like to offer a sincere thanks to the Staff on 2 West at Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence for the kindness and care extended to Catherine while under their care. Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Streets, Lewiston on Wednesday from 3- 6 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 10, at 11:00 AM in St. Peter's RC Church, 600 Center St., Lewiston, with the Rev. Msgr. David G. LiPuma officiating.
