Sorry to see Nelson's passing. We were friends at Penn State, I believe in the late 1960's. We joked around a lot and one time I challenged him to a wrestling match. We went to the gym, he played with me for awhile and then pinned me in no time flat.
He has and will always be in my memory.

I was a 496th TFS crewmate of Nelson's at Hahn AB, Germany. We would sit in the scheduling office and tell great stories and laugh and laugh -- he had a wonderful sense of humor. Nelson lived down on the Mosel River north of the base near the town of Traben Trabach and had the best apartment. His passing brings back fond memories of those days so long ago. I am sad to learn of his passing at an age I think of as young … Lord, Bless Nelson and keep him close. I pray that someday, God willing, we may meet again and laugh and relive old times.

I'm sorry for your loss. I was one of many Ramstein Alert Crew Chiefs who sat on the "Q" with Nellie. He always treated us as teammates and his sense of humor made those long hours a lot more bearable. He was a good man and will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear of Nellie's passing. We met when he came TDY to Moody AFB from Hahn in 1976 and were classmates in the F-4 Fighter Weapons School in 1981. Our paths continued to cross over the years and the last time I saw him was `in Orlando in 2014 and we kept in contact via e-mail after that. Nellie was one hell of an aviator and a fine USAF officer! May you Rest in Peace Nellie! My condolences and prayers to his family!

I met 'Nellie' when he arrived at Hahn AB in the '70's. We all knew him as "Nellie" because EVERYONE had a nickname, whether they liked it or not. His nickname belied the consummate professional aviator that he was!
Nellie had many friends, simply because, upon making his acquaintance, any erstwhile ENEMIES IMMEDIATELY SURRENDERED!
He had two facial expressions; the menacing stare of a Steely-Eyed Killer who was ready to fight to the death; and also the loving eye of the Biggest, Baddest, Meanest, Nastiest, Kindest, Gentlest, TEDDY BEAR that just made you want to give him a Great Big Hug!
We will all miss Nellie greatly and all the fun times we had together!

Margie and family, I have never met you and sadly Emma only ever met Uncle Nelson and Aunt Margie once. She enjoyed writing the letters to the two of you and receiving Aunt Margie's responses. We offer you our condolences and while we have not met most of you, all of you are in our nightly prayers. I hope you find peace as you grieve for the loss of your husband, father, uncle, cousin, friend, comrade. We offered to bring Martha to the viewing and funeral but with her health issues and the weather, she thought it best to remain at home. Emma is going to visit her today. May God comfort and bless all of you.

Margaret, I was so sorry to hear of Nellie's passing. I was so happy to see you both at the 496th Reunion two years ago. It seems like yesterday, to be at the Hahn O'club and watch Nellie and Bob Downs holding court with a couple of "crew toonis".

Margaret,
Mike and I were so sorry to hear of Nellie's passing. We just found out tonight. You were so kind to us when we were stationed at NIAG in 1987-1990. Mike has spoken about Nellie over the years with great admiration and a bit of the shaking of the head. You'll know what I mean.
Our heartfelt condolences. Please let us know if we can help in any way.
With love and respect,
Kris and Mike Benevento

Toni and I are truly sorry for your loss. Nellie was one of our favorite people. He was a great person to work with but more importantly he was a devoted husband and father and a true officer and a gentleman, patriot, and an incredible aviator! Nickel on the grass for my friend and partner Nellie Beard. See you at the rendezvous point Nellie!

I remember meeting Nellie and Margie for the first time at a GDIT holiday party and thinking, “Who is this funny, kind, light-spirited man?” He was always telling jokes and making you feel at ease, even after he learned he was unwell. He will be missed. Your family is in our prayers.

Maggie & Maddie - I'm so sorry that Nelson passed away. What a wonderful husband, father, & friend. I remember when My parents & I met Nelson & Maggie at Mather AFB in California during his Training. We became instant friends playing cards & drinking sangria. Over the plus 30 years knowing him, he always looked after his family especially his wife Margaret, Daughter Madeline & son Nels. He loved working in his garden, he always was in the kitchen helping out with Thanksgiving & Christmas Dinner that Maggie had been preparing since Morning. When my dad got sick he wanted to move from California to Youngstown to be close to Nelson & Maggie. So we moved 3200 miles & only 5 doors down the street from them. He was so happy that him & Nelson could reimsniecse Military stories. The 4 of us would sometimes go to the Diner for Breakfast or Friday night Fish Fry. Nelson helped dad join the Youngstowns Lions, which allowed them to spend more quality time. When my dad got sick & passed away Nelson & Maggie where there to help me through everything.
Nelson was a VERY SPECIAL GUY, THAT HAD A HUGE HEART & COMPASSION THAT WAS UNMARKABLE. HE WAS CARING, THOUGHTFUL & LOVING TO EVERYONE THAT HE MET.
His wife Maggie & daughter Maddie will have a hole in their heart for sometime, but GOD will continue to let them know that Nelson isn't suffering anymore & that Nelson has a NEW PERFECT BODY, which he can share with his son Nels & everyone else in HEAVEN.
May Nelson REST IN PEACE & THAT HEAVENLY FATHER WATCH OVER HIS FAMILY
MAGGIE, MADDIE & DAVE.
Love always
Dawne
