Eber, Jean Elizabeth

(Nee Deering)

Nov. 25, 2017, of Lewiston formerly of Eggertsville. Cherished daughter of her late parents Charles A. and Gertrude Deering; dear wife of the late Martin Eber; most beloved “little sis” of Nancy Deering, Charles (late Betsy and Arlene) and the late Paul (Bev); kind aunt of Patrick, Jeffery, the late William, Matthew, Robert and Deborah. She has such a family of special, life-long friends, Joyce Korabek and “Bro” Bob, Roger Apps, Kay Mahoney Coulter, Denise McGrath, “cousin- sister” Pat Woodcock, her staff at ECC North bookstore and her beautiful friends, late Dorothy Slaybod and Vern Rogers. Jean loved all animals especially dogs; in childhood Skippy and Sandy and her rescued dogs McDuff, Mary Jane, Marriah, Sugar and Jakey. But she held a special place in her heart for her last dog, her unforgettable border collie “Katie Kid” who gave her so much pure love and joy.

Jean graduated with honors from Lewiston-Porter H.S in 1963 and was the first female ever elected Senior Class President there. She earned a B.A. degree in 1967 from Harper College (SUNY Binghamton) in classical civilizations. She then worked in the NYS College and University Accreditation Dept. in Albany and was also a ghostwriter of speeches from the Governor Nelson Rockefeller. In the 1970’s she and her husband Martin owned and ran an independent bookstore in San Diego until his sudden death in 1978. A widow at age 32, Jean returned home and became the bookstore manager at ECC North Campus with 10,000 students from 1978-2000. She absolutely loved her job for 21 years! She was hardworking, dedicated and innovative. But because Jean had such empathetic personality, was so thoughtful and concerned about others, she was respected and loved by her staff. She treasured so many warm, lasting friends she made here and indeed throughout her life. Jean loved the Pacific Ocean, adored books especially British Mysteries in all forms, “Foyle’s War” and Michael Kitchen, “Sherlock” and Benedict Cumberbatch, gift shops and Elvis. She and her husband accidentally went to “Woodstock” in 1969. What and experience.

A graveside memorial service will be held on Jean’s birthday; August 7, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Riverdale Cemetery 5605 Old Lewiston Rd. Lewiston, NY 14092. Donations much appreciated to the Niagara County SPCA. Also please offer a random act of kindness in her memory for someone less fortunate.
