Frances Horning, age 98, formerly of Lewiston died Sunday February 18, 2018 in the Pines at Machias Nursing Home in Machias, NY.

Frances was born March 1, 1919 in Johnstown, PA, the daughter of the late Clarence and Helen (Eichler) Davis and had resided in Lewiston for over 50 years. She had been employed as a clerk with United Hotels Co. for two years before attending the State Teachers College in Fredonia, NY. In 1949 Frances organized and taught the first Kindergarten class at Stevenson Elementary School in Ransomville. She later taught third grade there for many years and retired in 1974. She had received a Certificate of Recognition as an Outstanding Elementary Teacher of America in 1974, sponsored by her former Principal, Dennis Mallast.

Frances was a former member of the Lutheran Church of The Messiah in Lewiston; a member and held the office of Secretary with the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Lewiston; member and Vice President of the Ridgeview Garden Club in Lewiston; and a member of the St. Francis Guild with the craft group of Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital in Lewiston.

She is survived by her children, Linda (Edward) Hale, Paul (Naomi) Horning, and Thomas (Jacqueline) Horning; five grandchildren and a great grandson; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by two sisters, Alice Ross and Dorothy Davis; and two brothers, Robert Davis and Lt. Arthur Davis, a pilot killed in action in WW II.

Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of The Messiah, 915 Oneida St., Lewiston, NY 14092 or to the Olmstead Center for the Visually Impaired 1170 Main St., Buffalo, NY 14209. Arrangements have been entrusted to HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Sts., Lewiston.
