I was very saddened to hear that Nelson suddenly passed away. We met while both teaching in Korea and the crazy times over those 6 months are too many to list here. He was a GREAT teacher and awesome guy. I can only imagine the void that he's left your family but thank you so much for sharing him with the world. Every message is another person that he touched and allow that to bring you even a tiny bit of comfort. I believe in the eternity of life and unbreakable bonds with loved ones. He is always with you. Nelson - Thanks for all of your help when I first got to Korea. I would have been lost without your guidance, advice and hints. It was wonderful hanging out with you in difference places and getting stares from taxi drivers who thought we were Russian.
The ELP students will be sorry to hear about Nelson Teacher. You are always the first one they ask about whenever I see one of them. You taught with a passion and flair that the students loved. I learned a lot from you too.

I am so sorry for your loss. I got to teach with Nelson for almost two years while in Korea. He was a wonderful person, and we made some great memories together. I will never forget that lovely smile. His larger than life personality will never be forgotten.

I'm sorry for your loss. Nelson was one of a kind and left a lasting impression on everyone he met. We were co-workers and neighbors in North Carolina. We spent a lot of time walking the dogs, talking about school, and even spent some time on the weekends going shooting. The morning we found out we were having a child our car tire was deflated. Nelson came over and told us we could drop him off at work and take his car for the day. Although it doesn't seems like a huge gesture, he was constantly doing small, helpful things for us. We will sincerely miss him.

Mr beard was my daughters most favorite teacher. He connected with her in no way that any other teacher could . She likes every subject now even her dreadful math . I like his addicting smile and seen how he made people's weakness a strength. He never seemed to have a bad day always laughing and lifting people up . Sorry to loose a kind soul like him .

As a high school teacher in Salamanca, I didn't really know Nelson well, but in every encounter he was enthusiastic and focused about his profession. He seemed to be in education for all the right reasons. He made a lasting impact on the students and staff who were lucky enough to know him. Deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Please accept my sincerest condolences on the passing of Nelson. I worked with Nelson at Sandy Grove Elementary School in Hoke County as the music teacher. Nelson was always jovial and had nice things to say about everything and everyone. His students thought the world of him and so did his fellow coworkers. I'm sure he did the same at the other schools he taught. The world has lost another light in education.

Nelson and I worked together at Sandy Grove. I was a brand new teacher struggling to find my way and find my passion for teaching again. He talked to me on many occasions and helped guide me to find my love for teaching. He was the teacher every kid wanted to have, and a teacher I aspire to be like one day. Nelson will be greatly missed.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Beard and family,
We would like to express our sincere condolences to your family at this time of great loss. Your son was an amazing man who I had the privilege of calling one of my closest friends. I also had the pleasure of working with him at Prospect Elementary. I only knew Nelson for 3 years but somehow I felt like I had known him my entire life. My family loved him deeply and he loved us deeply, especially my son Isaac. Not a day has ever gone by without Nelson calling, texting, or actually spending the day with us. Nelson had the ability to draw people closer together with his stories, his charisma, his intelligence, and his nonstop humor. I loved cooking with Nelson and he would always look forward to our dinner/game nights. He made life fun and interesting everyday. His friendship is irreplaceable and I will forever miss him while keeping his memory alive. Please know that we are grateful for the time we had with Nelson, but our lives will never be the same without him. We will continue to pray for your family....for peace and comfort during this difficult time and in the weeks and months that lie ahead.

I loved working with Nelson in Hoke County at Sandy Grove Elementary. He was loved by all of his students, the parents as well as the faculty of the school. I was shocked and saddened to hear of his passing. I mourn for the students who will not have him for the rest of this school year, as well as the students who will not have the joy of him as their teacher in the future. Know that there are many people in North Carolina praying for you and your families in this time of mourning. May God grant you peace.

Like many I didn't want to believe the news when I heard it. I loved Nelson with all my heart. Being with this man was unforgettable. Our first date was nothing less than amazing. Such a gentle giant my first words to him was WOW you're tall. We went to the park and I was taught how to make a paracord bracelet. We sat and talked and within minutes he had me laughing so hard you would have thought we had known each other forever. He truly wanted to bring out the very best in everyone he met. Watching him and Roy together was so much fun. That dog lived from Nelson. I was so proud of the man he was and he was always doing more to better himself and others. The last I heard from him was Friday afternoon. If I had known if was our last conversation It would've been more memorable, more loving. To his family, He talked about his parents and sister with much respect. You raised a one of a kind man with an over pouring heart. My heart is heavy but I am happy to have been a part of his chapter in this world. Until we meet again, Love your LB

Nelson and I began teaching second grade together at Sandy Grove Elementary School in North Carolina in January 2012. It was an interesting adventure from the start because we began in the middle of the school-year and both came from "The North".
From our first meeting, we became instant friends. Our teaching relationship continued to grow and, it must have been obvious to our principal how great we were as a team, because she had us loop with our students from second grade up to third. She also intended for us to loop up to fourth grade as well, however, Nelson decided to move back to New York.
Nelson was an amazing teacher and person…to say the least. He was who I went and talked to every morning over coffee. He was, as we joked, my "Work Husband" because I could look at him during a meeting, and he knew EXACTLY what I was thinking. He was helpful, knowledgeable, and most importantly...an outstanding teacher.
His love for his students was remarkable. I have never met a teacher who went so far above and beyond for their students in order to help them achieve their goals. He never accepted “I can’t” from a student. He just constantly worked with them to make them understand...even if it involved karaoke.
I distinctly remember a conversation I had with Nelson one day. He was talking about his goals, which he and I discussed quite often. He was talking with me about where he saw himself working in New York, and the type of school he felt would suit him best. He said, “I would rather work at an inner city or rural school that has much less than a school that has everything.” I asked him why? He said, “I just want to be able to give kids as much as I possibly can…and I know that most of the time kids in schools with students who don’t have that much…those are the ones who REALLY need me.” I immediately got teary-eyed when I heard those words come from his mouth because THOSE are the words of a true and genuine teacher. THAT is who Nelson Beard was.
The students who had yet to have the opportunity to meet him are the ones who are at a true loss today. Although the rest of us are sad and will miss him forever, we will always have the amazing memories we had with him.
Rest in peace Nelson…I will NEVER forget you and the memories, laughs, and great times we had with each other. I have no doubt that we will see one another again.
With my deepest sympathy,
Melanie Cohen

Although we lost touch over the last few years, I will always have found memories that will last throughout my lifetime.

I've known Nelson since 1st grade. He also introduced me to my husband, Brendon. He was not only a friend, but an integral part of our family. His sudden passing has left a hole in our hearts and a void in our lives. The world is a dimmer place without his smile and his easy laughter. I pray for comfort for his family, friends, co-workers, and students. He was loved by many.
