Please share a memory of Dorothy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Dorothy Jayne Hughes, formerly of Ransomville, passed away September 20, 2023, at NorthGate Health Care Facility, under the care of Hospice and surrounded by her family. She was 96 years old. Dorothy was born December 9, 1926 in La Salle, NY to the late Eugene Hugo Krieger and Edith Elizabeth Kinter. She was one of 14 children. She excelled at school, and was a graduate of La Salle High School. While still a student, she was scouted for a secretarial position in Washington, DC, but remained in La Salle to care for her many siblings, nieces and nephews. She went on to work for Kimberly Clark. On June 7, 1947, she was united in marriage to Francis 'Frank' B. Hughes at the First Methodist Church in La Salle, NY. Dorothy loved learning and became a self taught baker. She baked wedding cakes for countless weddings across Niagara County, and taught cake decorating classes out of her home. She also managed the Dairy Queen on Military Road, which was owned by her sister at the time. As a strong woman of faith, Dorothy served as the Directress of the Altar Guild at both St. Peter's and St. Paul's Episcopal Churches. In her free time, Dorothy explored the world through adventure novels and mysteries. When she wasn't busy solving crossword puzzles or playing cards, she was crocheting afghans for friends, family and the VA Hospital. As friends and family moved cross country, her afghans have remained a warm and long lasting reminder of her love. Above all, her greatest joy was her family. Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved husband Frank in 2005. She is cherished by her children, Kent (Sandra) Hughes, Scott (Susan) Hughes, Kathleen (Mark) Oliphant, adored by her grandchildren Michael, Laura and Jonathan Hughes, Arron and Sara Oliphant, and great grandchildren Dutch and London Oliphant. She is also survived by two of fourteen siblings, Howard Krieger and Jeanette Bailey. A private service for immediate family will be held at a later date. Dorothy will be interred beside her loving husband at St. Paul's Episopal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Altar Guild of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 400 Ridge St., Lewiston, NY 14092. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Hardison Funeral Homes Inc., 3648 Ransomville Rd., Ransomville, NY.
