Robert W. Jones, age 88 of Youngstown, died Sunday October 18, 2015 in Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence in Lewiston, after a lengthy illness.
Robert was born April 16, 1927 in Niagara Falls, NY, the son of the late Theodore M. Sr. and Dorothy (Gibbs) Jones. A Veteran of WW II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served until he was honorably discharged with the rank of Aviation Electrician's Mate third Class in 1948. He had taken part in Operation Crossroads, attending the first atomic bomb test and had served aboard the USS Cumberland Sound in 1946. He was the recipient of the American Victory and the American Theater Medals. Robert married Dolores (Fabiano) Jones on October 11, 1952 at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Niagara Falls, NY and they have resided in Youngstown since 1968.
Robert retired from NY Telephone in 1986 after 371/2 years. A communications serviceman, he
had worked at the Lake Placid Olympics in 1980 setting up the videos. He was a member and former Vestryman and Warden of St. John Episcopal Church in Youngstown and a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Robert bowled in the Mixed Retirement League at Frontier Lanes in Lewiston and was secretary for 20 years with the Youngstown Couples Bowling League also at Frontier Lanes. He volunteered for many years with the March of Dimes, Niagara Hospice, the American Cancer Society, and the Youngstown Free Library.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Dolores; his daughter in law, Marcella Jones of Youngstown; his grandchildren, Miranda Ann and Ian M. (Lauren) Jones; his great grandchildren, Austin, Faith, and Ezra; a sister, Dorothy Lee of Redding, CA; two brothers, Charles J. (Joan) Jones of Binghamton, NY and Lawrence E. (Joan) Jones of Colorado; a sister in law, Catherine Jones of Niagara Falls, NY and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Keith Jones in 2004; three brothers, Donald E., Raymond G., and Theodore M. Jones, Jr.; and a sister, Laura Marsden.
Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Streets, Lewiston on Wednesday from 2 - 6 pm. Funeral Services followed by Military Honors will be held Thursday, October 22, at 11:00 AM in St. John Episcopal Church, 110 Chestnut St., Youngstown, with the Rev. Alison J. Martin officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 366, Youngstown, NY 14174 or to Our Lady of Peace NCR, 5285 Lewiston Rd., Lewiston, NY 14092.
