ERVIN M. HELWIG
Ervin M. Helwig, age 91 of Lewiston, died Thursday October 30, 2014 in Mt. St. Mary's Hospital Lewiston, after a brief illness.
Ervin was born September 30, 1923 in Niagara Falls, NY, the son of the late Ervin and Agnes (McDermott) Helwig. He graduated from Trott Vocational High School and in February of 1943 enlisted in the U.S. Army. Ervin served with the 24th Ordnance Battalion Headquarters Medical Detachment and took part in the Ardennes, Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland Campaigns. He was the recipient of the American Service Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the WW II Victory Medal. Ervin was honorably discharged with the rank of Tec 5 in February of 1946. The following June he married Margaret "Peggy' (Phillips) Helwig and they moved to Lewiston in 1952. Peggy predeceased him in 2003. Ervin was employed by Great Lakes Carbon in Niagara Falls, NY for 35 years, retiring as a Quality Control Technician in the early 1990's. He had also worked for the Village of Lewiston for over 20 years; from 1971 to 1976 he was a Patrolman for the Police Department.
Ervin was a member of the Niagara Frontier Bible Church and the V.F.W. Lake Ontario Post # 313 in Youngstown. For many years he was a Boy Scout Leader in Lewiston. He was a great outdoorsman, enjoyed bowling in Niagara Falls, woodworking, and he loved to do crossword puzzles.
He is survived by a daughter, Marion D. (Walter) Wrobel of Youngstown; a son, Ervin "Butch" M. (Nadine) Helwig of Houston, TX; and a brother, William (Shirley) Helwig of Lakeland, FL.
Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Streets, Lewiston on Tuesday from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 pm. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, November 5, at 11:00 am in the Niagara Frontier Bible Church with the Rev. Richard Gilbert and the Rev. Thomas J. Broderick officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in North Ridge Cemetery, Church Rd., Town of Cambria. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 101 John James Audubon Pkwy., Amherst, NY 14228 or to the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, PO Box 631, Buffalo, NY 14240-9856.
