Robert Bryce Lowe at age 83 went to be with The Heavenly Father and the Loved ones who have passed before him on Monday, December 14, 2009 in Niagara Hospice House in Lockport. Robert was born July 21, 1926 in San Francisco, CA, the son of the late Thomas J. "Jack" and Wilhelmina "Minnie" (Senechal) Lowe. At the age of two he moved cross country with his parents to Niagara Falls where he spent the rest of his childhood. In 1944 he graduated from LaSalle High School where he played football and basketball. Robert enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1945 and spent almost two years in Germany. He started his journalism career there working for his regimental newspaper. He was in the press corps for the Nuremburg War Crimes Trials. After his honorable discharge in 1946, he continued his journalism career as a sports reporter for the Niagara Falls Gazette. During his years at the Gazette he became the Sports Editor and also the Sports Publicity Director for Niagara University. Robert married Elsie Kraft in 1952 and was married thirty years until she passed away in 1982. After leaving the Gazette in 1972, he became Sports Director for WHLD Radio, returning to the newspaper when he started as a sports reporter, then Sports Editor of the Tonawanda News, where he retired from in 1990. He spent his life loving sports. He always brought area youth sports to the forefront throughout his career. As much as he loved sports. he hated the New York Yankees. Robert was an avid bowler, bowling in several leagues and tournaments. He bowled in 54 consecutive New York State Men's Bowling Association Tournaments. He is a member of the Niagara Falls and New York State Bowling Hall of Fame. Robert was a member of the Lutheran Church of The Messiah in Lewiston, a past President and Life Member of the Lewiston Kiwanis Club, and past President of the Mt. St. Mary's Hospital Board of Associates. He was a warm, gentle, and loving man. He is survived by his wife, Jean M. Lowe, whom he married in 1988 and stayed by his side throughout his extended illness; his children, Scott (Sandy) Lowe of Butler, PA, Robin (Brenda) Lowe of Youngstown, Bryce (Karen) Lowe of Lewiston, Sherri (Doug) Zeitz of Youngstown, and Stuart (Linda) Lowe of Lockport; his step children, Bill (Elisa) Metke of San Francisco, CA, Debra Boos of Williamsville, NY, and Michelle Minarcin of New Smyrna Beach, FL; 28 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 2 nephews, and I niece. He was predeceased by a brother, Harold Lowe. Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Streets, Lewiston on Wednesday from 4 - 8 pm. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, December 17, at 10:30 AM in the Lutheran Church of The Messiah, 915 Oneida St., Lewiston, with the Rev. Thomas Mason and Rev. Milan Slahor officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Riverdale Cemetery, Lewiston. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Church of The Messiah, 915 Oneida St., Lewiston, NY 14092 or to Niagara Hospice House, 4675 Sunset Dr., Lockport, NY 14094.
