Obituary of Richard L. Hess, Sr.

Richard L. "Rick" Hess, Sr., 66, of Canisteo, NY, formerly of Youngstown, NY, died on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 in Arnot Hospital, Elmira, NY. Born in Niagara Falls, NY on July 20, 1947 to the late William I. and Sarah M. (Gillilam) Hess. After graduating from Lewiston Porter High School, Rick enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1968. He was Honorably Discharged on June 12, 1970. During his service in the Vietnam Conflict he received numerous Medals, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with 1 Star, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the Good Conduct Medal. Rick was employed at the Carborundum Co. in Wheatfield as a Chemical Operator, retiring after 32 years. He was a member of the Canisteo American Legion Post, but mostly he enjoyed the outdoor life. Rick is survived by his two children, Richard ''Ricky'' Hess, Jr. (Barbara Ledford) of Youngstown, NY and Robin K. Hess (Shavonne Davis) of Niagara Falls; a brother, William I. ''Punky'' Hess, Jr. of Youngstown. He was predeceased by his daughter, Amanda Hess, who passed away on November 29, 1998.
