Obituary of Esther O. Sherman

Esther O. Sherman, age 87, of Lewiston NY, passed away peacefully on Wednesday February 26, 2014 in Mt. St. Mary's Hospital in Lewiston, after a short illness. Esther was born February 11, 1927 in Niagara Falls, NY, the youngest of three children of the late Albert and Esther (Peterson) Olson, immigrants from Skutskars, Sweden. Esther graduated with the Class of '45 from LaSalle High School and later from Kelly's Business School, both in Niagara Falls. While a secretary at Union Carbide in Niagara Falls, Esther met Peter Sherman. The two were married in Niagara Falls on July 8th, 1949. Enjoying a full and active life, Esther served for forty years with the Niagara Council of Girl Scouts where she earned the "Thanks Badge" award for exceptional adult service and delivered Meals on Wheels for over thirty five years. An active member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Esther sang in the choir, led youth programs, served as financial secretary and brought Communion blessings to shut ins. Talented in quilting, knitting, sewing and cross stitch, Esther shared her gifts generously participating in sewing groups and bazaars at Bethany and later Zion Lutheran Churches in Niagara Falls. Esther is survived by her husband, Peter; four sons, Paul (Dawn), Daniel (Richard), David (Joan), and William (Ona) Sherman; eight grandchildren and one great grandson. She was predeceased by a daughter, Beth Sherman (Bill Henning); a sister, Sylvia (Nick) Aleksivich; and a brother, Albert (Betty) Olson. She will live on in the hearts of the many friends and family whose lives she touched and brightened. Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Streets, Lewiston on Saturday, March 1, from 1 - 4 pm. A Memorial Service will begin at 4:00 pm in the funeral home, with the Rev. Thomas Mason officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905 or to a charity of one's choice.
