Obituary of Dorothy A. Cunningham

Dorothy A. Cunningham, age 86 of Lewiston died Saturday October 5, 2013 in the Conesus Lake Nursing Home in Livonia, NY. Dorothy was born May 21, 1927 in Rochester, NY, the daughter of the late Willis and Helen (Knapp) Smith. She was a graduate of East High School in Rochester and a 1949 graduate of Buffalo State Teachers College with B.A. in Education. On February 9, 1946 she married Robert H. Cunningham and they moved to Lewiston in 1948. Robert predeceased her on September 8, 1977. Dorothy continued her education at Niagara University and was certified in Social Studies. She was a substitute teacher at Lewiston Porter Junior and Senior High Schools from 1959 to her retirement in 1982. Dorothy was a volunteer curator at the Lewiston Museum for over 20 years until 2002. She was a member of the Lewiston Senior Citizens. She will be remembered as a lifelong learner, and excellent gardener and baking breads. She is survived by a daughter, Ellen (Frank) Gendreau of Dansville, NY; two sons, Robert (Diana) Cunningham of Bloomington, NY and James (Ronnie) Cunningham of Port Henry, NY 7 grandchildren and 1 great grandson. She was predeceased by her step mother, Catherine (Shannon) Smith; a daughter, Nancy Cunningham; a sister, Jean Signor; and a step sister, Florence McKie. Graveside Services will be held Saturday, October 12, at 2:00 pm in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston. There will be no prior visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Historical Association of Lewiston, P.O. Box 43, Lewiston, NY 14092. Arrangements have been entrusted to HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Streets, Lewiston.
