Herman V. Stanley, age 94 of Youngstown died Monday April 15, 2013 at his home while under the loving care of his family and Niagara Hospice.
Herman was born November 30, 1918 in Detroit, MI, the son of the late William and Ella (Gehring) Stanley and has lived in Youngstown the past 60 years. On April 25, 1942 he married Anne (Profeta) Stanley. In September of 1942 he was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corp. Herman served in the Eastern Theatre of Operations, including time in England France, and Germany. He was the recipient of the German Occupation Medal, the Marksmanship Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Corporal in January of 1946. While in the service, Herman worked as an aircraft sheet medal welder. After the War, he ran an auto body shop in Niagara Falls. Herman then went to work as a Millwright, employed by the Carborundum Co. in Niagara Falls, NY, retiring in 1983 after 25 years of service. While there he had 2 Industrial Patents Pending.
Herman was a communicant of St. Bernard's RC Church in Youngstown. An avid hunter and fisherman, he especially enjoyed spending time with his family.
His wife, Anne, predeceased him on April 6,2006. He is survived by his children, David Stanley of Youngstown, Steven Stanley of Lewiston, and Joanne (James) Szostak of Ransomville; his grandchildren, Kimberly, Samara, and Steven Stanley, Christopher (Katie), Michael (Hope), and Kevin Neal; 5 great grandchildren; and a brother, Robert (June) Stanley of Niagara Falls, NY. He was predeceased by a son, Gary Stanley; a brother, William Stanley; and a sister, Audrey Stanley.
Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME. N. Fourth & Ridge Streets, Lewiston on Wednesday from 4 - 7 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, April 18, at 10:00 AM in St. Bernard's RC Church, Second and Hinman Sts., Youngstown, with the Rev. Msgr. Thomas Moran officiating. (Please assemble at Church) Burial will follow in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston. Memorials may be made to the Youngstown Volunteer Fire Co., Ambulance Fund, PO Box 387, Youngstown, NY 14174.
