Obituary of Wallace J. Karyus

Wallace J. Karyus, 87, of Ransomville, NY, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at Crestwood Health Care, after a brief illness. Born in Buffalo, NY, June 11, 1925 to the late John G. and Edna A. (Merz) Karyus. Wallace was a graduate from Tonawanda High School in 1943, and then enlisted in the US Army Air Corp. in 1994. He was the Navigator flying the B-29 Super Fortriss (Black Magic) with the 881st Bomb Squadron, 500th Bomb Group, 73rd Wing 20th Air Force during the air offensive of Japan. Wallace received the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal and WW II Victory Medal, until his honorable discharge in 1946. Wallace continued his education after WW II from the University of Buffalo, where he received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1951. He then began working at the Carborundum Co., Niagara Falls in 1951, until his retirement in 1987 as a Process Engineer. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion, AMVETS and the Elks Lodge. Wallace is survived by his wife, Ada M. (Miller) Karyus, whom he married on March 1, 1974; and a son, John Jay Karyus of Burbank, CA. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday (March 20) at 2:00 PM, from the HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, 3648 Ransomville Rd., Ransomville, NY, with Rev. Charles Lamb officiating. No prior visitation.
