James F. Vittie, 89, of Wilson, NY died on Friday (August 24, 2012) in Niagara Hospice House, Lockport, after a lengthy illness. Born in Cornwall, Ontario, on April 12, 1923 to the late Wilfred and Margaritte (Bero) Vittie.
Jim graduated from Niagara Falls High School and Trott Vocational, before enlisting in the US Army, where he served during WW II in the European Theatre and was honorably discharged in 1945. Jim was employed at the E.I. DuPont Co. Niagara Falls for 36 years, retiring as a Supervisor of Operations. Jim enjoyed music and was well-known for playing lead guitar in the "Arnie Becker & the Highlites Band" who played at the former Hardings Restaurant on Creek Rd., Youngstown, for 15 years. He also enjoyed golfing and resided, in the winter months, in Land O Lakes, Florida. Jim was a former member of the VFW Lower River Post #7847, Lewiston.
Jim is survived by his five children, Vadonna (Ernest) Pipiles of Wilson, Marlene (Daniel) Kalbfleish of Gasport, James D. (Deborah) Vittie of Asheboro, NC, Louonna (Jon) Grierson of Ransom, WV and Mary Fenn of Wilson. He is also survived by a brother, John Vittie of Florida; nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; three great-great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Carl; and a sister, Phyllis.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. No prior visitation. Memorial donations may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Dr., Lockport, NY 14092. Arrangements have been entrusted to the HARDISON FUNERAL HOMES, Ransomville, NY.
