Chester P. Serba, age 91 formerly of Niagara Falls died Monday June 4, 2012 in the DeGraff Memorial Hospital in North Tonawanda, after a long illness.
Chester was born June 18, 1920 in Youngstown, NY, the son of the late John Sr. and Bertha (Ceasar) Serba. He grew up in Youngstown and was a 1937 graduate of Youngstown High School. Chester enlisted in the U.S. Army on January 7, 1942 and served proudly with the 17th Calvary Reconnaissance Squadron. He took part in the Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland Campaigns and was the recipient of the American Service Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Chester was honorably discharged on December 20, 1945 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He went to work for Moore Business Forms as a Machinist and retired from there in 1980.
He was a former member of St. Bernard's RC Church in Youngstown and a life member of V.F.W. Lake Ontario Post #313 in Youngstown. He loved fishing, cooking and his pet cats.
Chester was predeceased by his wife, Helen (Tweed) Serba. He is survived by his children, Janet Westoven of North Tonawanda, Carol Welch of Niagara Falls, Sue Westoven of Lewiston, and Frank Serba of North Tonawanda; 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Paula Heim and three brothers: Edward, John Jr., and Frank Serba who died in WW II.
Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Sts., Lewiston on Thursday from 6 - 8 pm. Funeral Services with Military Honors will be held Friday, June 8, at 11:00 am in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery,Lewiston, with the Rev. Msgr. Thomas Moran officiating. Memorials may be made to the Niagara County SPCA, 2100 Lockport Rd., Niagara Falls, NY 14304.
