Lewiston, Michael Maslen, age 48 of Lewiston, died Sunday February 12, 2012 in Our Lady of Peace Nursing Care Residence in Lewiston. Michael and his family has fought courageously for the past 25 years, as advocates for those people and their families who have suffered massive head trauma
Michael was born May 28, 1963 in Niagara Falls, NY, the son of David B. Maslen and Joyce E. (Pletcher) Maslen both of Lewiston. He was a 1981 graduate of Lewiston Porter High School and was an all round athlete. He played youth and high school football, downhill skied, and was a Golden Gloves Boxer with a 9 - 1 record. Michael worked in construction, iron working, masonry, and carpentry. On July 28, 1986 he was struck by a car in Buffalo and suffered severe traumatic head injuries which left him in a coma for 12 days with very little hope of recovery He was diagnosed as being in a vegetative state. At that time in Western New York there were no facilities which could or would accommodate Michael's physical or financial needs so his family found help through the National Head Foundation. Michael was placed in a facility near Pittsburgh which offered physical and cognitive therapy. His family made the 41/2 hour drive to see him every other week. They never gave up on his recovery. After two years Michael was able to sit up with assistance and communicate. In time he was able to return home to be cared for by his family. His family's love and Michael's spirit and courage have been a true inspiration to all.
He is survived by his father David B. Maslen and his step mother, Sandra Jo Maslen; his mother, Joyce (Tony) Gordon; four sisters, Sherry Ann Castagner, Gerry Pardee, Patricia (John) Robins all of Lewiston, and Deanna (Michael) Barone of Niagara Falls, NY; several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
