Steve Babyak

Stephen "Steve" Babyak, age 91 formerly of Ransomville, died Thursday, November 24, 2011 at his residence in Hammondsport NY, under the loving care of his family and Southern Tier Hospice. Steve was born December 10, 1919 in Central City, PA, the son of the late Michael and Anna (Bak) Babyak. At the age of 7 they moved to Niagara Falls, NY where he attended Niagara St. School, 24th St. School, Gaskill Jr. High School, and Trott Vocational School. In 1937 he entered the Civilian Conservation Corp in Attica, NY and served there and at Camp Newlands, Nevada until his honorable discharge in 1939 at Ft. Dix, NJ. Steve was the Welterweight Camp Pugilist at both camps and had boxed in Buffalo and Fallon, NV as well. He was also an U.S. Army Veteran of WW II. On March 18, 1945 he married Violet May (Amsdill) Babyak. She predeceased him in 2005.Steve a welder employed by E.I. DuPont Co. in Niagara Falls, NY for 36 years, retiring in 1977. He also ran a farm on Palmer Rd. in Ransomville for 35 years until 1980 when he moved with his wife to Hammondsport, NY. Steve was a member of the O. Leo Curtiss American Legion Post # 830 in Ransomville. He is survived by his son, Michael Babyak of Avoca, NY and a daughter in law Lynn Babyak of Hammondsport; his grandchildren, Michael Babyak, Jr., Jeremy Bard, Alex (Brooke) Babyak, and Julie (Tony) Anderson; his great grandchildren, MacKenzie Anderson, Hunter Babyak, Brianna Bard, and Gabriel Babyak; his adopted grandchildren, Petie and James Forte, and Olivia Johnson; a brother in law, Clayton Hauck; several nieces and nephews. , Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, 3648 Ransomville Road, Ransomville on Monday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 PM. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, November 29, at 11:00 AM in the funeral home, with the Rev. Gary Wood officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in the North Ridge Cemetery, Church Rd. Town of Cambria. Memorials may be made to Southern Tier Hospice and Palliative Care, 11751 E Corning Rd., Corning, NY 14830. The Babyak family would like to extend a special thanks to the Ravelingeen Family for their love and support during Steve's illness.
