Bernard D. Israel, age 92 of Wilson , passed Friday August 12, 2011 at his residence under the loving care of his family and Niagara Hospice.
Bernard was born March 27, 1919 in Lockport, the son of the late Albert and Minnie (Miller) Israel and was a graduate of Wilson High School. He married Rena (Rogers) Israel on July 14, 1945.
He was a farmer, conservationist, active in town politics, and worked in the paper box industry. Bernard was employed by Bickford Box in Sanborn for 30 years, retiring as foreman in 1984.
He served as a Wilson Town Councilman for 24 years and had served on various boards. Bernard was the last charter member of the Wilson Conservation Club; an Exempt member of the Wilson Volunteer Fire Co. # 1; a NYS Hunter Safety Instructor; a member of the Wilson Historical Society; the Arbor Day Foundation, the National Rifle Association; and the North Ridge United Methodist Church. He loved outdoor activities, hunting, fishing, fast pitch softball; as well as bowling, pets, playing cards, and good jokes. Bernard was an avid reader of history, adventure, and western tales.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Rena; a son, Roger V. Israel of Wilson; his grandsons, Justin (Susan) Israel of Lockport and Jaren Israel of Wilson; a sister in law, Rose Marie Rogers of Veradale, WA; and several nieces, nephews, and many friends. He was predeceased by a daughter, Maureen Israel; a brother, Vinal Israel; and a sister, Garnette Upton. ,
A Celebration of Bernard's life will be held Saturday, October 8, 2011 at the Wilson Conservation Club, Townline Rd., Wilson from 3 to 7 pm. Memorials may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Dr., Lockport, NY 14094. Arrangements have been entrusted to HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, 3648 Ransomville Rd., Ransomville.
