Robert E. Schuman, age 89 of the Town of Cambria, died while under the loving care of his family and Niagara Hospice on Friday April 15, 2011 in Niagara Hospice House in Lockport. Robert was born March 7, 1922 in Wilson, NY, the son of the late Edward and Gertrude (Drews) Schuman. An U.S. Army Veteran of WW II, he served from December of 1942 to his honorable discharge as a PFC. in October of 1945. Robert served as a gun crewman with the 94th Armored Field-Artillery Battalion and Battery C, 397th Armored FA Battalion. His unit took part in the Ardennes, Central Europe, Normandy, Northern France, and Rhineland Campaigns. Robert was the recipient of the Distinguished Unit Badge, the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a Heavy Equipment Operator, employed by the NYS Department of Transportation in Lockport, for 32 years retiring in 1983. Robert was a member of the North Ridge United Methodist Church, the Cambria Volunteer Fire Company as well as an Exempt Member, and a life member of the Wilson Conservation Club. He was a "jack of all trades" and enjoyed being outdoors. Robert married June M. (Miller) Schuman on July 11, 1970. In addition to his wife he is survived by a son, Kenneth R. Schuman of Lockport; his step children, Jeanette Gillogly of Atlanta, GA, Frederick J. (late Gerry) Brown of Delevan, NY, Richard Brown (Jennifer) of Gainesville, NY, Bonnie (Patrick) Smith of Appleton, NY, and Lori Zehler of Warsaw, NY; 13 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Gloria Snyder. Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, 3648 Ransomville Road, Ransomville on Monday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 PM. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, April 19, at 11:00 AM in the North Ridge United Methodist Church, 3930 North Ridge Rd., Town of Cambria, with the Rev. Matthew Worley officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow in North Ridge Cemetery, Church Rd., Town of Cambria. Memorials may be made to North Ridge United Methodist Church, 3930 North Ridge Rd., Lockport, NY 14094.
