Obituary of Mary G. Viverette
Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Gertrude Viverette (Miss V), age 91 of Lewiston, passed away with dignity and peace while under the care of Niagara Hospice House and her adopted family, on Thursday February 24, 2011.
Mary was born July 4, 1919 in Niagara Falls, NY, the only child of the late Peter and Olive (Wright) Vevirit and was a lifelong Lewiston resident. She graduated from the Lewiston Red Brick Schoolhouse in 1937 and from Buffalo State Teachers College. Mary was a Home Economics teacher for the Newfane School District for 35 years. Her goal was to introduce her students to all that life could hold for them. She traveled to Europe twice with them. Mary had an interest in the history of Europe but her great love was for her country. Never marrying, she referred to her students as "Her Kids" and often said, "I loved each and every one of them". After 61 years, she still received cards and letters of love and gratitude for the positive influence that she had in their lives. Mary spent her life giving to, caring for, and loving others.
Mary was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston and the Lewiston Garden Club for many years. She was an avid historian and had a great love for books.
She is survived by her adopted family, daughter - Colleen (Paul) Thurman; grandchildren, Katie Thurman (Scott Hoyle) and Sean Thurman; great grandsons, Austin (Sweetheart) and Eliott (Blue eyes).
Services will be private. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions in honor of Mary may be made to the Lewiston Public Library or to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Dr., Lockport, NY 14094.
