John grew up in a small California desert town. Ridgecrest is the kind of town where there is no shortage of absolutely nothing to do. Cold in the winter. Relentless heat in the summer. It’s the kind of place where only the determined survive. The kind of place that makes a boy resourceful and independent. And that was John.
He was an outdoorsman at heart. Skills he learned as a Boy Scout. Fishing. Setting up camp. Building campfires. Resourceful and independent. In fact, our mom referred to him that way. The original Boy Scout. I would like to remember John that way. Even when his compass wasn't calibrated, metaphorically speaking, he forged on with determination throughout his life. Never looking back.
We spoke days before his passing.I missed a lot of years with John. I am thankful for the good times we shared. I am very thankful to have had the opportunity to speak with him one last time. We recalled that we both accepted Christ in our dad’s ‘Good News Club’. I prayed for The Lord’s comfort and wisdom. He prayed for strength to fight on. There was no fear expressed, either way, as every good Boy Scout knows.
Hug your family, and the people you love, each and every one, and more than once. Share your feelings. Make connections. The memories we create last longer than our days.
