I never met Mrs. Barmasse, but I worked with her son, Matthew, for many years. He often spoke of his love for his mother and how much she meant to him. He spoke to her on the phone almost every day. Matt attributed his love for learning, reading, and family to her. Matt looked forward to spending more time with his mother in his retirement. I offer my condolences to Matt, Christine, Matt's daughters and sons-in-law, Matt's siblings, and their families.

My favorite teacher at Lew-Port, for 12th-grade Advanced English. She was wonderful! Really inspired me to write.
Everyone loved her. One day in class, we realized she often used the phrase "if you will," and started keeping count. When she hit 500, we decided to surprise her with a celebration. We all made sure to be in the room before she got there, so that when she came in the door, she was met with a loud fanfare, flashbulbs, cheers, a cake, and a plaque presented by the Vice Principal (see photo). We showed her the chart we had developed, detailing her progress over the weeks, and pointed out the spikes when she spoke on a topic she clearly loved (Beowulf was one). After inundating her with all that, we finally gave her a chance to respond, and she asked, "I really say that?"

Dear Mark, Matt, M. Scott, Marquette, and family,
Mrs. Barmasse was truly amazing to behold. She was filled with love and devotion for her family. I was always amazed that she could teach all day, come home have dinner on the table, go to sports games (all of her children were involved in sports), and still be filled with energy at the end of the day. I will never forget how kind both she and Mr. Barmasse were to me. I know she will be dearly missed by all of you. I am so sorry that you are all experiencing this deep grief.
With love,
Susan Schearer Kirkendall

Dear Barmasse Family
I'm Sorry to Hear of "Mrs. B's" Passing. She was One of My Favorite Teachers at Lew-Port. Even Today I fondly remember My Senior English Class in 1986 and the Life Lessons She taught. She was right when She said "Damn it All People, You Have to Work in Life", and "Mommy and Daddy are going to cut the apron strings when You Graduate this June". She was so beloved that Her Homeroom Class all signed a Joke Card from Spencer's of a "Flasher wearing a Santa Suit and gave it to Her at Christmas. A Friend in the room said She laughed throughout The Period. Perhaps My Strongest Memory of Her was when She learned that My Best Friend and Classmate RJ was contemplating suicide. It was the same week We were discussing Hamlet. Without disclosing that She'd found out about His turmoil, She told RJ that "Hamlet was a Coward" and "Suicide is the Ultimate Copout". Today RJ, My Friend of 40+ Years is alive and well and looking forward to His NYS Pension. . RIP "MRS B" and Thank You.
You ALL are in My Prayers
