To Mike’s family- We share your grief and send our love and sympathy to you all. Our family lived 2 doors down from their place on Chestnut Rd, and have many treasured memories of the horses, the creek, your garden, cannon balling into your pool, sledding on our barn hill- from when Gary was in diapers until now. May the Lord give you His peace and strength, wrap you in His loving arms, and sustain you until we see Mike again, in heaven.

My name is Brian Traynor I served with John in the 10th Mountain Division in the late 90s. About a month ago I was talking with my wife about my time at Ft Drum and I told her a few funny stories about John. I decided to look him up on Facebook and I got in touch with him, we had a couple great conversations on the phone laughing and telling stories. It was like we had been apart only a few days. John was a Master Sergeant and a Ranger. and he did everything he could do to take care of his unit and his bull headed Captain ( me). He took the Ranger creed seriously. He was one of the great ones. I wish I had called him one more time but I am so grateful we did reconnect and that I had the great fortune to serve with him

On behalf of my paents, Richard and Lois Frizzell, who were Michael's Godparents, and me & my family, we are planting trees in honor of Mike. He was always dearly loved and considered close family to us all. My parents are devastated over losing him, as are so many of us. I called him big brother/cousin, friend and encourager and Army Leader. We had so many hilarious, fun, adventurous, and even some tough times. I followed him into service in the US Army. From the time I was commissioned, my nickname from Mike became LT. But we are all saluting John Michael now. Save us a seat up there Ranger Fry! You'll be leading from the front again as we come join you, our greatly loved one, in heaven and in eternal joy. Rest easy now.

Yes! John Michael had many friends, and I am proud to have been one of the many. I remember the good times celebrating a meal or two, then Oktoberfest at Woodcock's. These pictures captured the good times he bestowed on his friends and family. I know how much he is already missed. I knew him through Nancy and my other adopted sisters, bound together by God's love. That is the love that will see us through this loss. God's love to all the family during this time of need.

Nancy, Kurt, Grant,
On behalf of my parents Jerry and Mary Lou, and my siblings Mike, Scott, and Kathy we offer our deepest condolences for your loss.
Mike was the oldest of our gaggle of cousins that would swim at Aunt Harriet's and enjoy reunions at the lake. He was also the first of our generation to join the military and set a great example for those of us who joined him in serving.
The tributes shared here point to his true character as a Leader, Husband, Father, and Friend.
He will be missed.
Very Respectfully, Todd Freischlag

In early 1986 Blue Oyster Cult came to Berlin. John (SSG Fry) was a big fan of BOC. He invited Peter J Flanagan and I to go with him. We were close enough to touch the stage during the concert. We were out late and went to the field the next day. I had hearing damage for days later. I don't hear BOC without thinking of that night and SSG Fry. RIP John Freischlag

John, I’ll miss your always positive attitude and personality. I’ve had the privilege of having you as a friend for 42 years when we met in Berlin. My visitation at your and Nancy’s house has been one of my fondest memories. You were great to work with, and I’m sure anyone’s athlete that with you found the same. Your fight in this life is over, but you won’t be alone, the rest of us will be following in time. Rest well my brother.

I had the upmost pleasure of knowing John for a while in my life and he was just such a kind, wonderful, good human being. They say you can tell a lot about a person based on how dogs react to them. I’m pretty sure John was Maverick’s favorite. He turned his giant self into a lapdog just to be closer to him.
I can’t find the right words to tell you all how heartbroken I am for loss. Sending you all the strength and I love I have.

John, I didn’t serve in your squad when I was in Scouts CSC 3/6 Inf. You were the type of NCO I tried to inspire to. When I was visiting Buffalo you and Nancy came and had dinner with my wife and I. That showed me what kind of leader you were. I really enjoyed that time. You will always be remembered in our hearts and minds. God speed Brother until we meet again!

Mr. Freischlag,
I never really knew you all that well, even though Kurt and I were pretty good friends in Junior and Senior High School. That is, until I got my license and bought my first car! That car was a white, 1987 Chevrolet Camaro with “T” tops and I thought I was the coolest thing since sliced bread. I remember “racing” it down Daniels Rd, joy-riding around Wilson with friends, but most of all, I remember doing burn-outs and donuts with it! One day while riding around with Kurt in the above mentioned Camaro, we got the bright idea to go to your house and take it for a spin. Well, one thing led to another and we may have gotten a little bit carried away and I began to test my “donut-making skills” out in your backyard! Little did I know, we made some good donuts…and ruts as well! The next time I saw you, I remember that you talked to me about the ruts in your backyard and coined the nickname “Speed Racer” for me. I couldn’t believe how calm, cool and collected you were about me doing donuts and rutting up your backyard with my Camaro. That memory was one of the first times I had met you and little did I know, that was the beginning of our friendship. May you rest easy, peacefully and pain free. Until we meet again good sir, cheers to you! Thank you for all that you did for our country and for your service.
Very Respecftully,
Brian J.

John, we had been friends for 40 years, you were my best man at my wedding, last time I saw you was when we were stationed together at FT. Drum and at your retirement ceremony. It all seems like yesterday. I'm gonna miss our random phone conversations and social media messaging. We had always kept in touch throughout the years and last talked when I was headed to the BOC concert in Florida last year, I got you that concert shirt and will hold it for you until we meet again someday. Dear Nancy, Kurt and Grant, I was very blessed to have Michael as a friend for over 44years. He was an exceptional person who loved his family very dearly. We spent a lot of time together in high school with a great group of friends. I lived away from Wilson when he was in the Army so I thought I would never see him again. Fortunately he moved back to Wilson and we caught up years ago when I moved back. I would have loved to be here when he and Nancy were raising their wonderful sons. Whenever we went out as couples, I always asked about Kurt and Grant and enjoyed every minute that I heard about them. Every dinner together in the past few years was an update on his beloved grandsons, Elijah and Noah. He adored his grandsons, just as he adored his sons! I am so happy for all the good times we had together. I told him that I wanted to be the friend that always made him laugh. We will look forward to taking Nancy out for dinner in the next years. I truly treasured Mike and I thank the Lord that both he and Nancy have been part of our lives. You and Nancy are so loved.
Love from your friends, Margaret Voutour Gaertner and Steve Gaertner.

When I arrived in Berlin John Freischlag was one of the first NCOs I encountered. As a fresh Private, I was immediately intimidated by the Ranger tab (it was the first I had seen.)
Being accustomed to only Drill Sergeants, I was taken back by his somewhat casual demeanor and quiet professionalism.
You taught me so much about soldiering, lessons that I passed on to my soldiers when I became a squad leader; your legacy lives on in the Infantry of today.
Godspeed Brother

John (Staff Sergeant Fry to me), you and Nancy both had a great influence on my life while we were in Berlin, and your standards followed me through my Army career. I remember the simple days of just a squad leader teaching his troops. The one pic here I remember vividly. We were in West Germany, and you taught us resection with the town Church steeples in the valleys below us. Plus, Nancy was way ahead of her time with Military Family member advocacy. You both taught me what it was to take care of troops. RLTW and you have left a legacy. God Bless you Staff Sergeant Fry.
