Thomas Wessel of Youngstown, New York passed away September 8, 2023, after catching a glimpse of the other side and smiling widely prior to passing. His survivors, in addition to his wife, Marlene, are his children, Jessica (Jeffrey) Streb, Daniel (Kelsey), and Renee (Matthew) Lesh; and his grandchildren, Sarah, Samuel, Lucas, Charlie, Elise, Christine, and Andy; his siblings, Kathleen Tank, Janet (Peter) Klemann, Beverly (Ed Cicotte), Paul (Adele), and Carolyn (Timothy) Kerr. He is predeceased by his parents, Norbert and Kathleen and his brothers, Norbert, Jr. and David.
Tom was born into the nicest family in the world in 1953. He enjoyed a wonderful childhood and family life built on love, respect, and regard. His life as an adventurer began in 1969 when he parachuted into Woodstock and if you look closely, can be seen playing backup to The Band for a split second. As the genius of love, he was the inspiration for “The Tom-Tom Club’. He attended USC and beat a famous football player (before he was famous) in arm wrestling. His career began in the hotel business prior to an illustrious jaunt with The Postal Service. In addition to his wife, he began a lifelong musical love affair in the 80’s with singer Sade Adu, who brought him great joy. His children, however, brought him his greatest happiness. He played with them for hours on end; encouraging them, instructing them, respecting them and most of all, loving them. He also liked cats. And elephants. He loved all sports, music, and history. Everyone enjoyed his great charisma, charm and unique humor. In retirement, he loved and entertained his family and grandchildren mostly, but also fought forest fires with his friend, Smoky, solved mysteries, danced when no one was watching, lit up the world with his boyish grin and embraced life and people with congenial humility and grace. He collected everything. He leaves behind a heartbroken wife and family, a lot of sneakers, watches, T-shirts and hats. Entering heaven, guided by his trusty cat, China, he will be greeted with the open loving arms of his parents, brothers, and assorted relatives and pets.
He has requested no visitation or funeral. A memorial service will be held October 14, 2023, at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Youngstown 100 Church St. Youngstown, NY. He will be buried at White Chapel Cemetery surrounded by his beloved parents and brothers. Memorials may be made to the PKD Association www.PKDCure.org.
