I send my belated condolences to Margaret and the Hanavan family. I just heard today that John died in late March while we were out of town. I knew John since I started practicing medicine in 1981 at HCP and he always had a smile on his face. He diagnosed my chronic hip pain at Southgate Medical Group and setup my successful surgery many years ago. He was a great person and great medical/orthopedic practitioner. We always had a good laugh when I visited him after my retirement in 2016. I will always have positive memories of John in the years ahead. David E. Gunther, MD (retired)

I met John at UB Sports Medicine where he served as a mentor for my students from WNHS. He was a wonderful person who was not only brilliant, but also kind, patient and down to earth. I became a patient when I needed orthopedic services and I brought, my mom, husband and children to John over the years. He was always willing to help us and absolutely did when others failed. Since John got sick, I was sad that I lost my “go to guy” who was always available to answer a question or give me and my family medical care. I thought about him often and was going to reach out to see how was doing a few times, but always hesitated because I didn’t want to bother him. Last night I woke up during the night and thought about him. This morning I came across this. I am deeply saddened to learn of his passing. I send my sincere condolences to his wife and entire family. John was a man who walked the walk and he definitely left a positive impact on this world. May he Rest In Peace. I will miss you John, thank you for everything!

I had been a patient of John’s starting at Health Care Plan. I continued with him through UB Orthopedics and then on to Southgate Medical. John was the kindest, caring medical professional I have had the please to meet. He always had a smile and a hug when he came into the room. I will always be grateful for his expertise and sincere support for me.
I will miss him immensely.
Godspeed my friend.

John was a great friend to us. He always approached life with a wonderful sense of humor and an enviable perspective on the importance of friends and family. He was also an extremely valued source of care for our orthopedic ailments over the years. His approach to his final illness was inspiring, reflecting his usual humor, but also wisdom and grace. We will keep him alive in our memories.

John took care of me when I had knee surgery 15 years ago, but I still remember him. I was so appreciative of his medical expertise and knowledge of skiing. I peppered him with questions and after a long recovery he helped me return to the sport I loved.

I am sorry to hear of John's passing. I worked side by side with him and was a patient from time to time. John's sense of humor was a part of him.....He had many hardships and if you didn't know him, or work wiith him and yes party once in a blue moon....Some of us knew John was kind . He has had so many disappoints including a death of his child........John made me laugh no matter how stressed we all were....Once in awhile someone comes into your life that has made myself a better person. He loved a good laugh. So, John, until we meet again..........Nancy Setlock LPN
