Obituary of James Clarke Stuart

James C. Stuart, 94, of Lewiston, NY passed away on August 1, 2021. He was born on April 27, 1927, in Beacon, New York, and was the son of the late Ralph B. Stuart, Sr. and Lilla Losee Stuart. A 1943 graduate of Niagara Falls High School, James enlisted in the United States Navy Reserves in June 1944, and served as Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class with Navy Carrier Air Service Unit 22 (CASU-22) and Navy Carrier Air Service Unit 25 (CASU-25) during WWII. He was honorably discharged in July 1946. He then attended Cornell University, graduating in 1951. He retired from Bell Aerospace where he worked from 1943-1944 (Bell Aircraft), from 1952 to 1955, and from 1966 until his retirement in 1996. He also worked at Western Auto and , Stewart Supply Co. in Niagara Falls, and was the Ass’t Director of Civil Defense for Niagara County from 1951-1952. He was the Clerk-Treasurer of the Village of Lewiston from 1955 to 1966. On June 9, 1951, he married Carol J. Farr and they recently celebrated their 70th Wedding anniversary together. James was a Life Member of Lewiston Fire Company #1, having joined in 1952 and he served terms as both Treasurer and Director during his years of service. He also served on the Town of Lewiston Fire Prevention Bureau for many years. James was a charter member of the W.N.Y. Council of Safety and Health (WNYCOSH); was a past treasurer, steward, and safety chairman of the United Auto Workers Union Local 501; and a founder and director of the Niagara County Court Observers. He was also a long-time member of the Lewiston First Presbyterian Church where he had served as an elder. In addition to his wife, Carol, James is survived by his five children, David (Jacqueline) Stuart, Linda (Stephen) Ruest, Lawrence (Donna) Stuart, Curtis (Wendy) Stuart and Jane (Michael) Gurr. He is also survived by his brother, Thomas (Mary) Stuart, of Albuquerque, NM, 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Ralph B. Stuart, Jr. Family and friends may call from 5-8 PM on THURSDAY August 12th at the HARDISON FUNERAL HOMES INC. corner of N. Fourth St. and Ridge St. Lewiston. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on FRIDAY at the First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston 505 Cayuga St. Lewiston. Burial will be in Dickersonville Cemetery.
