Upon entering Cornell university as a freshman, I found that my roommate, Paul Baker was an honest and compatible soul. I remained his roommate as a sophomore, and again as a senior at Cornell in the fraternity, Phi Delta Theta, where he became the president and I the vice president in our senior years. After graduating, I lost track of Paul for several years. I went on to obtain my MD at State University of New York at Buffalo, and then moved to California, where I had a career as a family doctor for 40 years in Redding California. I never forgot Paul, and was shocked at reading his obituary.
I clearly remember visiting the family farm in Ransomville for our winter break in 1967, and I distinctly remember his dad, Red, waking us up at 05 30 AM to prune the Apple orchards and”get to work if you want to eat breakfast!” I also remember a confrontation with a dairy cow in their milking barn, when I was totally unfamiliar with handling large animals, and received a very quick education, as in “get out of the way and don’t get hurt.”
I am so sorry to hear about his untimely death, and I would like to send my condolences to his entire family and friends. I will remember him as a genuine, honest, hard-working, intelligent, devoted, compassionate and devout man. And he had a pretty good short range jumpshot. He will live forever in my memory.
