Obituary of Thomas L. Beachy

Thomas Leonard Beachy passed away on April 17, 2021. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY on June 12, 1934 to Walter and Regina (Virginia) Beachy. Tom was a graduate from Lasalle High School, served in the Army National guard from 1958-1964, and earned his bachelor’s and Masters degrees from Buffalo State in Industrial Arts. He also earned baseball MVP honor in 1957 at Buffalo State with a .357 batting average. He spent his career as a driver education teacher, industrial arts teacher, and work experience coordinator at Lewiston-Porter High School for 34 years. He coached football and baseball there for 8 years. He was an avid boater and board member of the Tuscarora Yacht Club and a fan of Notre Dame football and the New York Yankees.
Tom was dedicated to his community in many ways. Upon retirement from teaching, he served as Town of Porter Councilman and Supervisor for 5 years. He worked for the Niagara County Sheriff Department as Traffic Safety Educator and taught summer school driver education, Driver Education certification, Driver Improvement, Defensive Driving, and classes for DWI offenses at Buffalo State, Niagara University, and Niagara County Community College. Tom is past chairman of New York State Driver Safety Education Association of Western New York. He was the Region 8 Vice-President of the New York State Association of the Traffic Safety Boards for 14 years.
Tom was involved with Niagara County Veterans Court as a mentor and a founding member of the committee to establish this program in Niagara County. He volunteered at the VA hospital in Buffalo with the US TOO prostate support group. He also served on the board of the Niagara Community Action Program and was a past chairman.
He was a 50 year member of Lewiston Kiwanis Club where he was a distinguished past president and distinguished past Lieutenant Governor. He helped develop the charter for the new Niagara Wheatfield Kiwanis Club.
Tom received awards from New York State Governors Traffic Safety Committee- Chairman’s Award 2005; Lewiston Kiwanis – Kaiser Fellowship Award 2011, and New York State Driver and Safety Education Association Hall of Fame 2013.
Tom was predeceased by this brothers Bob and Richard. Tom is survived by his wife of almost 62 years Carol (Wark) Beachy: father of Lynette, Renee, Darryl (Penny), and Sean (Sarah); grandfather of Daniel, Thomas, Connor, and Madison. He will be remembered as a caring teacher, true friend, loving father, and grandfather.
