It shook me when I heard from multiple sources about the passing away of Mel Baker. The first time I met Mel, was in the Dordrecht plant (in the Netherlands) start-up. I was then pleasantly surprised when DuPont transferred me to the Niagara Falls plant (February 1985) and offered me the privilege of working with Mel – a brilliant Chemist (& a damn good Chemical Engineer as well) & a classy guy. He was considered a ‘legend’ at the Niagara Falls facility; Both Margaret & Mel had helped my family settle down after the transfer in 1985. I would like to pass my sincere condolences to Margaret and the rest of Mel’s family including his daughter who had worked at the NF plant also…………Suri Dorai

I will always remember Mr. Baker and his amazing dedication to his talented daughter, Jane, and our entire group of young women playing soccer back at a time when women were just starting to make a mark on the sport. He was a bright light, always kind, and I seem to remember he often was accompanied by his seet dog!
Jane - my thoughts are with you and your entire family. I lost my father just a few weeks before yours, and I know we can both rely on beautiful memories of two amazing men. XO

Mike Blenk and Curt Lawson shared news of Mel's passing with me. My prayers are with Margaret and the whole family. I can remember starting my career at DuPont Niagara in 1979 and being assigned to Mel's Process Assistance Group. I learned a lot from Mel. Now here we are in 2021. Life is a journey that passes all too fast. I'm sure glad I knew Mel!

So sorry to hear of Mel's passing. Condolences and prayers for comfort to Margaret and the entire Baker family. Mel was a legend at the Niagara DuPont plant, and was a great friend and mentor to me during my time at Niagara. I have so many memories of Mel, but particularly enjoyed our time together during the startup of a new Terathane plant in Dordrecht, Holland. He will certainly be missed, but more importantly, will be remembered by those who worked with him.

I was so sorry to hear of Mel's passing. I have only known him for 5-6 years having met him at Niagara Frontier Country Club. Mel quickly became a friend and someone who I respected and admired. I loved his wit and his verbal gamesmanship on the course. I will always remember losing in a sudden death playoff match 2 years ago as Mel made a very long curving putt to eliminate my partner and I. Of course Mel chuckled at our expense. And we chuckled too, maybe a little less hardy as were beaten by an 89 year old golfer. I will always remember Mel fondly and will sincerely miss him. Please accept my condolences on your families loss.
