Obituary of Dwight D. Horning

Dwight D. “General” Horning, age 75, of the Town of Somerset and formerly of Newfane, husband of Marie (Nee Bortner) Horning entered into rest on Tuesday November 17, 2020 at Elderwood of Williamsville. General was born on May 4, 1945 in Lockport, NY. He is the son of the late Harold and the late Irene (Pettitt) Horning (Late James Wilson). He graduated from Newfane High School going on to NCCC receiving his associate degree and then attending SUNY Brockport and U.B. General married Marie A. Bortner on April 6th, 1968.
He was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam war serving from 1968 to 1969 including a 9-month tour in country. General and his mother Irene were Owner/Operators of Horning Farms and the Newfane Manor. He was a former member of the Niagara Co. Farm Bureau and the Newfane American Legion Post. General enjoyed playing cards, trips to the local casino and Las Vegas, attending his children and grandchildren’s sporting events, eating candy, and most of all his Pepsi. He was famous for sitting at the bar late into the night watching old tv shows and working on his crosswords and driving around in his pickup usually in the company of the family dog.
Surviving are his wife Marie; their children James (Ann Marie) Horning of Newfane, Kelly (Terry) Maines Jr. of Appleton and Stephen (Marissa) Horning of Hartland; grandchildren Connor and Brooke Horning, Matthew, Bradly and Jillian Maines and one grandchild on the way also surviving are many cousins. General is predeceased by his parents, also his brother Edward and sister Patricia.
Family and friends may call on TUESDAY (Nov 24) from 4:30 to 7:30 PM at the RUTLAND-CORWIN FUNERAL HOME INC. 2670 Main St. Newfane, NY 14108. Funeral Services will be held on WEDNESDAY (Nov 25) at 11:00 AM in the funeral home. Burial will be in Corwin Cemetery with military honors.
