Obituary of George E. Spatar, Jr.
George E. Spatar, Jr., age 90 of Lewiston, died Thursday December 21, 2017 in Mercy Hospital of Buffalo after a brief illness.
George was born May 20, 1927 in Buffalo, NY, the son of the late George E. Sr. and Antonette (Memuir) Spatar. He was raised in Ontario and was a graduate of St. Patrick High School. A Veteran of the Korean War, George enlisted in the U.S. Navy in February of 1947. He served aboard the USS John R. Craig (DD-885) and the USS Topeka (CL-67) and was honorably discharged in February of 1952 with the rank of Machinist Mate Second Class. George married Sheila (MacDonnell) Spatar on October 16, 1954 and they lived in Ontario before moving to Lewiston 43 years ago. George worked as a Machinist, employed by Keller Technology in North Tonawanda for 20 years, retiring in 1990.
George was a communicant of St. Peter RC Church in Lewiston. He was an avid reader and enjoyed golfing, curling, and softball. He had also played semi pro hockey as a young man.
He is survived by his wife, Sheila; his children, Deborah (Fred) Chandler, Gordon (Deborah) Spatar , and Susan (Russell) Joe; a sister, Eileen Foy, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a brother and two sisters.
Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Streets, Lewiston on Saturday, January 6, from 11 AM to 2 PM. A Memorial Service will begin in the funeral home at 2:00 PM followed by Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Upper Mountain Volunteer Fire Co. Ambulance Fund, 839 Moyer Rd., Lewiston, NY 14092.
