George Gaunt

June 15, 1922 — December 18, 2017

George Gaunt, age 95, formerly of North Tonawanda, died unexpectedly at his home in Ransomville on Monday December 18, 2017. George was born June 15, 1922 in Glasgow, Scotland, the son of the late Stewart and Mary (MacCarther) Gaunt. A Veteran of WW II, he served in the U.S. Army from January 1943 to his honorable discharge as a Cpl in November of 1945. He took part in the Southern Philippines, Luzon, and New Guinea Campaigns and was the recipient of the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon w/3 Bronze Stars; the American Theater Ribbon; the Philippine Liberation Ribbon w/1 Bronze star; the Good Conduct Medal; and the WWII Victory Medal. He was also a recipient of a Purple Heart for wounds received in action. George graduated from Trott Vocational High School after the war and worked as a Machinist in Research and Development for Moore Business Forms for over 40 years retiring in 1986. He lived in North Tonawanda for 60 years before moving to Ransomville this past year. George had played hockey in the Over 30 League for many years. He also was a Lawn Bowler at Hyde Park, bowled at Beverly Lanes in Niagara Falls, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Niagara Falls, Ontario. He married Winifred (Brown) Gaunt on April 26, 1947. She predeceased him in 1989. He is survived by a daughter, Catherine (Douglas) Burnett of Ransomville; his grandsons, John (Julie) and Steven (Meghan) Burnett; his great grandchildren, Torin and Ainsley. He was predeceased by a daughter, Patricia Gaunt and his siblings, Stewart Gaunt and Grace Wachob . Funeral Services were private at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made to the Niagara County SPCA, 2100 Lockport Rd., Niagara Falls, NY 14304, or to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 56 708 Buffalo Ave., Niagara Falls, NY 14303. Arrangements were entrusted to HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, 3648 Ransomville Rd. Ransomville.
