Leonard M. Bernstein, age 87 of Youngstown, died Friday May 28, 2010 in Niagara Hospice House in Lockport, after a long illness.
Leonard was born March 28, 1923 in Niagara Falls, NY, the son of the late Louis S. and Sara (Zemon) Bernstein. A WW II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1942 to his honorable discharge in 1946. Leonard served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and saw action in the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was the recipient of the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon w/1 Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Victory Medal.
Leonard received his B.S. in Business from the University of Buffalo and his Masters in Education from Niagara University. For 30 years he taught at Grand Island High School, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Temple Beth El in Niagara Falls and a former member of the Niagara Frontier Country Club in Youngstown. Leonard married Janeanne (White) Bernstein on December 16, 1950.
In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Linda J. Bernstein and a son, David J. (Lisa) Bernstein; his grandchildren, Kendall, Carly, and Jack; a sister in law, Marge Bernstein; and his
nieces, Carol Eisenhauer and Janet Rabice. He was predeceased by two daughters, Sara Bernstein and Deborah Orcutt; and a brother, Dr. Morley B. Bernstein.
A graveside memorial service with Military Honors will be held Wednesday, June 2, at 1:00 PM in the Temple Beth El Section of Riverdale Cemetery, 5605 Old Lewiston Rd., Lewiston, with the Rabbi Dorah Selel officiating. There will be no prior visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. St. Mary's Hospital Foundation, 5300 Military Rd., Lewiston, NY 14092. Arrangements have been entrusted to HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Sts., Lewiston.
