J. Michael Hinde, age 89 of Youngstown, passed away on Sunday August 27, 2017 after a brief illness. He was born on July 14, 1928 to Arthur and Margaret Hinde in Sheffield, England.

He graduated from Sheffield University in 1950 with a B. Eng. In Metallurgy and began his career as a Research Assistant with United Steel Cos. in Sheffield. In 1951 he joined Canadian Refractories Division, Kilmar, Quebec. He was transferred to Montreal in 1955 where he held various executive positions before becoming President in 1976. He was honored in the 1975-1976 edition of Who's Who in Canada.

He was transferred to Pittsburgh with Harbison-Walker Refractories, a division of Dresser Industries, in 1986 where he worked until his retirement before moving to Youngstown, NY.

He was a member of the American Institute of Metallurgical Engineering; Institute of Metallurgists-U.K.; a member of the Institute of Refractories Engineers and the Masonic Order.

An avid golfer, Mike enjoyed memberships at the Royal Montreal Golf Club and the Niagara Falls Country Club.

He married June MacLeod, daughter of Bond and Ellen MacLeod, on August 20, 1955. June predeceased him in 1999. He later married Rita Vescio who predeceased in 2012 and is survived by his loving wife, Fran Engel. He is also survived by his two daughters, Lyanne (Fred) Booth and Elizabeth (Ted) Russchen of Ontario, Canada.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Thursday, August 31, at 10:30 am in St. John's Episcopal Church, 110 Chestnut St., Youngstown, with the Rev. Wayne Knockel officiating. There will be no prior visitation. Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, N. Fourth & Ridge Sts., Lewiston.
