Joseph Zappy

Joseph A. Zappy, age 93 formerly of Youngstown died Friday October 20, 2017. Joseph was born on November 23, 1923 in Starford, PA, the son of the late Jacob and Mary Zappy. He was a U.S Navy Veteran of WWII and the Korean War, Serving from May of 1944 to June of 1946 and from June of 1950 to Sept. of 1951. He honorably discharged with the rank of MME 2C. Joseph served in the Gulf of Mexico, the Occupation Forces of Japan, and the American Theatre, and served for several years in the Naval Reserve at Ft. Niagara. After WWII he moved here from Starford, PA to work for the Niagara Junction Railway. He was an Engineer for 38 years retiring from Conrail in 1985. On December 1, 1955 he married Lillian Zita (Falcone) Zappy at St. Mary’s of the Cataract RC Church in Niagara Falls and they lived in Youngstown for many years. Lillian predeceased him on November 7, 1995. He enjoyed working on cars and gardening and was an avid NY Yankees fan. He was a communicant of St. Bernard’s RC Church in Youngstown and Our Lady of Fatima Shrine in Lewiston where he served as an usher and Eucharistic Minister. He was also a former member of the 2nd Order of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Buffalo. He is survived by his daughters; Gloria (Jeffrey) Baker and Betsy (Richard) Kilmer; son’s Mark Zappy, Stephen (Michelle) Zappy and Vincent Zappy. Also surviving is his sister Margaret Balogh; 6 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren and brother and sister in law Richard and Jeanette Falcone. Joseph is predeceased by his brother Mike Zappy and sisters Mary Dzubay, Helen Zappy and Anna Zappy. Friends may call at HARDISON FUNERAL HOMES, 3648 Ransomville Road, Ransomville, NY on Tuesday from 3-7PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Bernard’s RC Church, 2nd and Hinman Sts. Youngstown on Wednesday at 10AM (Please assemble at church) Burial with military honors will follow in St. Bernard’s RC Cemetery.
