Lewiston

John J. Hanrahan, affectionately known as Jack, passed away peacefully at home in Lewiston, NY, on January 19, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on February 21, 1941, in Niagara Falls, NY, to Matthew J. and Olivia S. (nee Blackley) Hanrahan.

Jack graduated from Niagara Falls High School in 1960 and served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Calcaterra from 1962 to 1964, receiving an Honorable Discharge. Afterward, he worked as an auto mechanic before beginning a long career with Leaseway Transportation, where he retired after 31 years of dedicated service. In 1966, Jack married Beverley Blain, and together they raised two children, Michael and Debbie. The family lived in Niagara Falls and later settled in Lewiston, NY, where Jack became a well-loved member of the community.

Jack had a great sense of humor and a warm, easy laugh that brought joy to everyone around him. He was a gifted storyteller, captivating audiences with his wit and charm. A man of steadfast friendships, Jack maintained lifelong bonds, staying close to everyone who stood beside him on his wedding day in 1966. He could still name everyone in his first-grade class photo, including his teacher, Lorraine Steffan of Dunkirk, who he's always kept in touch with. They've exchanged birthday and Christmas cards for decades.

Jack loved camping trips with his family and exploring the beauty of the outdoors. When his son's troop needed a Scoutmaster, Jack stepped in, inspiring other dads to get involved and join their sons on camping adventures. Jack and Beverley later expanded their travels, exploring all of North America in their RV, creating countless cherished memories along the way.

A dedicated member of the Lewiston Kiwanis Club, Jack earned numerous honors throughout his decades of service. In 1988, he was named Kiwanian of the Year, and in 1991, he received the prestigious George F. Hixon Award, recognizing his contributions to the organization. He served as Club President in 2000 and advanced to Lt. Governor of the Niagara North Division in 2002, representing eight clubs in the region. In 2017, Jack was honored with the Anton “Tony” Kaiser Award, the highest distinction in the New York District of Kiwanis, reflecting his exceptional commitment to the community and the Kiwanis mission. In 2024, Jack received the New York District Kiwanis Distinguished Service Award, the organization's highest honor for a "grassroots Kiwanian." This prestigious award recognizes an unsung hero whose tireless dedication and commitment to improving the lives of disadvantaged community members often go unnoticed. Jack’s unwavering efforts and quiet leadership embodied the spirit of this award, which is presented to only one Kiwanian each year at the district's annual convention. His recognition underscored a lifetime of service and his profound impact on both his club and the community.

Jack was deeply proud of his grandchildren, August and Felicia, who reside in McKinleyville, CA. Despite the distance, he stayed closely connected with them, often using his computer to keep in touch. He especially cherished watching them open Christmas presents every year via Zoom.

Besides his parents, Jack was predeceased by his sister-in-law and brother-in-law Marilyn and Gordon Polych of Jordan, Ontario, niece Bonnie Rosts of St Catherines, Ontario and close friend Mary Ecker of Youngstown.

Jack is survived by his wife of 59 years, Beverley; his children, Michael Hanrahan of Lewiston and his fiancée, Michelle Hosie of Youngstown; Debbie (Jeff) Gonzalez and his grandchildren, August and Felicia, all of McKinleyville, CA; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Fran & Trevor Jones, of Dundass, Ontario; niece Heather (Dwight) Peacock of St Anne's, Ontario; and many beloved family members. Jack will be missed by several close friends, especially Darrel Ecker and Harold "Butch" (Arlene) Emsweller, his best friends for more than 75 years.

Arrangements entrusted to the HARDISON FUNERAL HOMES, INC. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at a later date.
