William Holroyd, 91, of Lewiston, NY, died on Saturday, July 12, 2014 in Niagara Hospice House, Lockport, after a lengthy illness. Born in Springfield, MA on March 20, 1923 to the late Joseph W. and Sarah (Hay) Holroyd. Bill Graduated from Eastern District High School, Brooklyn, NY in 1942, where he excelled as a Scholar Athlete. Bill then enlisted in the US Marine Corps, where he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre and was Honorably Discharged in 1946. On June 14, 1947, Bill was married to Margaret Hale and began residing in Lewiston in 1948. Bill attended Niagara University where he again excelled in sports, especially basketball, where he served as the captain and received the most valuable player award on the 1948-49 team. He was selected to the "All Opponents Teams'' where he was assigned to guard top scorers on visiting teams. Bill received his Masters Degree in Education, and started his career as a Teacher and Guidance Counselor at Lewiston Porter School from 1950 until his retirement in 1984. He was a coach for JV Basketball for 2 years and appointed Director of Adult Education in 1953. Bill was very involved in the community, where he established the Lewiston Golden Age Program; initiated the Community Ambassador Program and organized the Community "Learn To Swim". He also served on the Niagara University Hall of Fame Committee for 20 years, was a Charter Member of the Kiwanis Club of Lewiston and was the Chairman of the 1st Lewiston Kiwanis Peach Festival; was a member and served on the Board of Directors at Niagara Frontier Country Club. Bill himself was inducted into the Niagara University Hall of Fame. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Margaret on April 13, 1988. He is survived by his three children, Nancy Martel of Riverside, CA, Christina (Joseph) Proietti of Niagara Falls and Richard (Marcy) Holroyd of Hoffman Estates, IL; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and his devoted friend and companion, Margie Bullis of Lewiston. Bill was loved and adored by all members of Margaret's Family. He was predeceased by a sister, Nancy Watts; and a brother, Frank Holroyd. A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at 11:00 AM from the First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston, 505 Cayuga St., Lewiston, with Rev. Elizabeth Morgan officiating. No Prior Visitation. Memorial donations may be made to Niagara Hospice, 4675 Sunset Dr., Lockport, NY 14094. Arrangements have been entrusted to the HARDISON FUNERAL HOME, Lewiston, NY
